Let's Go Green Day
On Friday 27th August 2010 Somerston will holding its second 'Let's Go Green Day'. The annual event is designed to encourage our colleagues to adopt practices which will have a positive impact on our environment. As part of the day we're asking our teams to pledge to making small changes in how they go about their day.

Let's Go Green Day is all about making changes in the way we conduct our business in order to be more eco-friendly. On Let's Go Green Day 2009 our colleagues reduced the number of miles travelled by car by an incredible 846 miles and we saved almost half a tonne of CO2 by using environmentally friendly transport. Small changes make a big difference!

Tell us what you'll be doing on 'Let's Go Green Day' below, listing a title for your comment, your name and your hotel or department.

Green Day 2
This year we are going to focus on
- turning off PC's in the back office
- not have TV's on standby in the bedrooms
- Change the lighting configuration in the bedroom so less lights on when the guest checks in

We also hope to be able to annouce in the near future that we working in partnership with a local company who will supply a courtsey bus service to the airport ever 10- 15 minutes in an enviromentally friendly vechicle hence reducing the number of taxi's we use for guest and also creating a new revenue stream for the hotel

I can't say I'm looking forward to friday - I intend working from our hotel at Stoke, I will travel by train to Stoke station and then walk along the canal for two miles to the hotel - come rain (probably) or shine! Will save on co2 emissions - and hopefully help me tone my 26 pack!
Have a great green day!

Going Green in Northampton continued...
Things we have introduced…
-Mixed recycling bins in reception, bar and kitchen to separate all waste.
-Mixed recycling bins on all floors of the hotel for Housekeeping to separate guest waste from bedrooms wherever possible.
-Always turn the TV off in the Great Room, rather than leaving it on standby during the day and at night.
-Signs to remind people to turn taps off fully rather than letting them drip and waste water.
-With agreement from our clients, putting reference numbers directly on invoices, rather than sending a copy of the back up, therefore saving one sheet of paper every time a third party is charged.
-Only issue one key card on check in unless requested- so it can’t be left in the electricity box
-Donate all old pillows, bed ends, sofa bed covers to hostels and animal charities
-Donate old mugs and glasses to homeless charities and refuges.
-Recycle old lost property, including clothes and paper items

Following a visit from Chris Mooney and then Martin Coombes, it became apparent I wasn’t very green!

So after discussions with both of them we have now changed the lighting in all of our bedrooms, we now only have the light on the wall as you enter on and the 2 bedside lights which are LED. The bathrooms lights, the blue light on the wall and the desk light are all off as of the 13/8/2010.
